This past Sunday, I met Reid at S&W sports in Concord to help him get outfitted. We, essentially, were starting from scratch so it took some time. What could have been a bland 2.5 hours spent in a bike shop actually ended up being 2.5 hours of laughter AT (sometimes with, but mostly AT) Reid and his struggles with gear.
We started with bikes. Reid, having very little knowledge about anything to do with road bikes immediately was drawn to the fast colored SNOW BIKES. Snow bikes… meaning the bikes with the huge monster truck like tires and chunky frames. We got him back over to the road bikes and began playing process of elimination – mostly based on color… Who cares about level of shifter, right? We got Reid outside to try the 3 we eliminated it down to for feel. He hopped on option 1 (a pretty ugly blue bike that we all knew from the start wasn’t gonna be the one) and Gordon, the guy helping us, told Reid to take it for a spin down to the end of the parking lot & back. Reid, being the over achieving athlete that he is, felt the need to put some distance in and disappeared around the corner of the shop and who knows where he went after that.
After we narrowed it down to two bikes, both red and very similar (maybe not in price), we moved on to shoes and pedals. That was a quick process due to Reid’s quick decision…… neon yellow, no question about it.
Helmet, training kits, and other accessories were a process of “try everything on and then choose one based on sickest color”. Hey, steeze is almost the most important factor, right?
We all got a good laugh in when it came to trying on gloves for fit. Reid picks up a pretty basic pair slides them on and exclaims “Wow, these feel great! These are the ones!”. Our helper and I exchanged glances of “Who’s gonna be the one to tell him”…. Reid’s “perfect fitting glove” was on backwards. Later, Reid told me that it felt better that way anyways…. LOL.
Two hours later we had a full outfitting of gear on the checkout counter (most of which was chosen based on color), and Gordon began to scan each price tag. Reid, clearly excited out of his mind, then grabbed the scanning gun from Gordon’s hands. He just raised his eye brows in response, Reid apologized, and we all got one last good laugh.
In the end of our bike shop adventures, Reid left with a BEAUTIFUL new set of wheels that he instinctively named Roxanne, and he’s ready to start riding!
